This quote was incredibly powerful to me. I was often called a feminist before I even decided if I would call myself one. I don’t know all of what I stand for yet, but I know what I don’t stand for, and that is sexism. If that makes me labeled a feminist, then that is fine with me. For most women, being independent and having strong opinions is often mistaken for being an aggressive feminist, which in no way makes sense. Feminism isn’t about hating men or acting like a raging lunatic, these are very common misconceptions. Instead it’s about being a woman who is empowered and brave enough to voice opinions. Its learning that being independent and capable of doing things on your own is so much more rewarding and builds incredible character and strength in a person. Feminism isn’t a cut and dry definition, it holds its own meaning to each individual, and unfortunately for some it holds a bad name. Really, it’s about understanding that women are capable beings who don’t need to play the victim because women are all strong, intelligent and capable of accomplishing anything that anyone else can and we should be proud of who we are.
In this blog I want to talk about the every day struggles of being a woman in today’s society. Yes it’s true, we have come a very long way because of amazing women like Susan B. Anthony, but there is still a long ways to go and it rests on the shoulders of each individual to make a difference. It may be 2015, but sexism is still very prominent in everything from work to walking down a public street. I invite anyone who has a story to share to please feel free to contact me, I would like to publish and use examples from real people. I would lastly like to make the point that this isn’t a negative blog, I am not going to be complaining or hating on men, that is not what feminism is. This is going to be a place where people can share personal experiences and turn it into something positive and work together to make a change because its important to educate people on this issue. Thank you to everyone and I hope you continue to read!
